How to Make a Baby Diaper Cake in Baby Tub
Back to Top
Newborns can go through 12 diapers in a single day (!). And as any new parent knows, diapers can quickly become the focal point of your home when you have a newborn. So, why not make them the centerpiece of a baby shower? Not just a big box of diapers, but a "cake" made out of them.
Diaper cakes have become a popular baby shower trend. And although they may look complicated, this project is a lot easier to create than you might think. Here, everything you need to know to make a unique diaper cake centerpiece that the mom-to-be will love.
What is a diaper cake?
A diaper cake is a cake-shaped structure that's built out of diapers and covered in decorations like flowers or stuffed animals. It usually has two or three tiers of rolled diapers that are wrapped in ribbon to resemble icing on a cake.
You can customize the design of your diaper cake to align with the baby shower theme. Although a straightforward cake is the shape you see most often, many baby shower hosts make diaper cakes that look like cars, motorcycles and even animals (unicorns and elephants are popular choices).
Why make a diaper cake?
Whether you are hosting or attending a baby shower, making a diaper cake is thoughtful and fun idea. Diaper cakes make for a memorable gift and double as an adorable centerpiece, but they're practical, too.
After all, new parents can't have too many diapers around, so these cakes can be a much-needed gift for the mom-to-be to take home when the baby shower is over. Some baby shower guests also opt to sneak additional diapering supplies into the cake (such as wipes and diaper cream) to make the gift even more useful.
How many diapers do you need for a diaper cake?
This depends on the size and shape of the diaper cake you're creating, but you'll probably need anywhere from 38 to 64 diapers for a three-tier cake.

A good way to calculate your number: Decide how wide you want the bottom of the cake to be and estimate how many diapers it will take to build that base. From there, think about how many tiers you want.
For each tier, divide the number of diapers in the tier below it by two to determine about how many diapers you will need for the next layer. For example, for a three-tier cake with a bottom layer made of 32 diapers, you would want 16 in the middle layer and eight on top.
How to make a diaper cake
They may look complex, but do-it-yourself diaper cakes are surprisingly easy to make in a few simple steps (and a little bit of patience). You probably have most of the supplies you need at home, and you can customize your diaper cake with decorations of your choice.
